Can i apply for an ext. of stay (Form I-539) even if my tourist visa (B-2) is expired but my I-94 still valid?

I came in the US on March 23 and was given 6 months to stay on my i-94 but my visa expired on April 24. Can i still file for an extension 45 days before my i-94 expires?
