If it were 1940's/50's?

Well you're right that music was more important than image, in that normal looking people could become successful musicians, but if you're trying to say that creativity was more important then you're completely wrong. Music was even more indistinguishable and had to conform to even more strict criteria. The music industry has ALWAYS promoted music which will SELL, not music which is challenging or creative.
